M60 Patton Tank Wins Middle Eastern Desert Battles: The legendary M60 Patton was the main battle tank of the US Army in the 1960s and 1970s.
It is still in service in 19 countries with approximately 5,000 usable tanks. The M60 is currently fighting the Turkish army in Syria and the Saudi-led coalition and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

It won't see any more combat with the US Army or Marine Corps, but several improvements have kept the M60 in the news. Also, credit must be given to the impact the M60 had on tank design after its first development. It was the M60 that led to the M1 Abrams, the National Training Center and Operation Desert Storm.
Originally produced in 1959, the M60 has been upgraded several times, most recently with the Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) M60A3.
This brought the weapon up to date, so it matched the M1A2 Abrams' 120mm M256 gun with a modern computerized fire control system.
It was a battle of major league power vs. power. The Israelis faced 3,000 enemy tanks from the Golan Heights and faced damaging AT3 anti-tank missiles against Egypt in the Suez Canal.
Veterans Park Expands Again With M60 Tank's Arrival
Israel immediately lost 100 tanks on the first day of the war. The M60 tower was tall and created an easy to aim silhouette.
After a single hit, the tanks burst into flames and the Israeli crew had to make a desperate escape from the burning tank while exposing themselves to enemy machine gun fire.

The US military knew it needed a training revolution after the alarming losses in the Middle East.

So they created the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, to push the envelope in tactics, strategy and tactics, including tanks, armored mechanized infantry, cavalry and artillery.
The M1 Abrams tank, M2 and M3 Bradley fighting vehicles, and multiple launch rocket systems were tested at the National Training Center.

The M60 Patton tank was the inspiration for the new armored fighting vehicle that would later appear in Operation Desert Storm. In fact, the US Marine Corps fielded the M60 during that first Gulf War. The Marines destroyed 100 enemy tanks and lost only one M60.

Sometimes earlier tanks like the M60 Patton don't get enough credit. Without the combat performance of the M60 in the Middle East in the early 1970s, the M1 Abrams would not have become a reality.
This evolution led to successful countermeasures with mass, speed and violence of action that were initially duplicated at the National Training Center and demonstrated against Saddam Hussein's armored forces during Operation Desert Storm. M60 Tank: A 3-Minute Story: In the summer of 2020, an M60 Patton tank rolls off a trailer and takes a prominent position at Wayne County Veterans Memorial Park in Richmond, Indiana. The Cold War behemoth, along with a pair of naval cannons, was donated to the park last year. The M60 was previously on display at the recently closed Howe Military Academy for more than two decades and is now on display alongside the park's two World War II M3A3 Lee tanks.
Although the M60 will likely never see combat again, there are still many operational M60s that have been upgraded and are ready to enter battle. The platform, originally produced in 1959 as a plug-in to improve Soviet tank design, proved to be much more than a stopgap solution. As of last year, the M60 is still in active service with around 17 countries around the world, a testament to the robustness of the basic design.

Egypt maintains one of the largest fleets of M60s, with around 300 M60A1 and 850 M60A3 variants still in service, while Saudi Arabia has around 400 in service.
Although Ankara plans to introduce a more modern, domestically produced Altai main battle tank, the Cold War-era M60 will likely remain in service for years to come. As Forbes.com reported last year, much of Turkey's tank force is made up of the M60, with more than 1,000 still in service but with improvements to the original design.
Turkey has for some time worked with regional partner Israel to help upgrade aging tanks. And while relations between the two countries are not as good as they once were, Israel has offered Turkey the Sabra upgrade package, which the Israel Defense Forces used to expand the capabilities of its own M48 and M60 Patton tanks.
To date, around 170 of Turkey's aging MBTs have been upgraded as M60Ts in a deal reportedly worth around $687 million. The upgraded tanks feature new active and passive armor, an improved fire control system, and notably a 120 mm smoothbore gun and a 1,000 horsepower engine.
Egypt To Receive M60 Tanks Engine Overhaul Parts Package
In the summer of 2020, Turkey further upgraded its M60Ts by adding the Pulat Active Protection System (APS) installed at six points around the hull to provide 360 degree coverage against missiles and other projectiles.
Considering how many M60s are now in service, it's no surprise that there is a large international market for M60 upgrades. Defense industry giants Raytheon and Leonardo have begun marketing upgrades to the M60 in recent years that could extend the design's life. Upgrades include a 120mm smoothbore main gun, capable of firing standard NATO ammunition, as well as engine upgrades and other passive armour.
Italy-based Leonardo is offering an armor upgrade that includes composite modules in the hull and turret, which the company says could match the M60 with third-generation tanks, including the German-made M1 Abrams and Leopard 2. Whether this is overly optimistic is debatable, but it can certainly provide increased capability for countries looking to maintain a large tank force.

Although developed from the M48 Patton, the M60 tank series was never officially designated as a Patton tank. The US Army considered it a "product-improved descendant" of the Patton tank design.
