There is a plot to overthrow Tsar Alexei, and Eli and the rest of the king's supporters cross paths. Eli's family does not have complete help: his elderly stepmothers are hostile to him, and his mother and sisters are mostly helpless (Russian society in the 1940s does not particularly encourage noble women to be tough and resourceful. The Emperor's wife, Caroline, a Scandinavian princess, is surprisingly helpful in Lizbeth and Felix's efforts to bring Eli's plight to royal attention. There are a couple of notable plot twists, one involving Eli's prison guard, a woman named Hubble who is said to be "void", impervious to magical spells... except it ends, for no particularly good reason, which seems like Harris' mistake. The second relates to the direction Elijah was given by the emperor at the end, which didn't make much sense from a plot point of view. It seemed like the author needed an excuse to move Ellie in a certain direction, and maybe that was a good reason for her to come. The Russian Cage plot takes a while to really get going, but the details as they unfold are complex and interesting enough to keep the reader engaged, and the bloody climax at the end is riveting. The denouement in the last few chapters is pretty tame, but it provides a reasonably satisfying conclusion to Lizbeth and Eli's story...at least for now. The Russian Cage is a fun adventure, burdened with the slavery and social issues that clouded The Longer Fall, not to mention the constant references to food and sex that slowed the pace of the book. The GUNNIE ROSE series is worth reading if you're into urban fantasy with an Old West flavor, which sounds like a contradiction in terms, but not quite.
