The M1 Abrams entered service in 1980 and quickly became the main battle tank of the United States Army and earlier the Marine Corps. The export version is used by the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Iraq. During the 1960s, the US Army and the West German Army collaborated on a single project to replace the M60 and Leopard 1 tanks. The resulting design, the MBT-70, incorporates new technologies across the board. Despite its extremely powerful design, its weight continues to grow, as does its budget. By 1969, the unit cost was five times the original estimate, prompting the Defense Department to terminate the program.
Tank development continued in earnest until January 1970, when the Ministry of Defense ended the tank partnership with Germany.

Due to problems with the MBT-70, the US Army introduced the XM803, which uses some of the technology from the MBT-70 but removes some of the problematic features. This only allows you to create an advanced system with the same capabilities as the M60.
In December 1971, Congress canceled the XM803, but allowed the Army to reallocate the remaining $20 million to develop a new main battle tank.
The Tank, Motor Vehicle and Ordnance Command (TACOM) began looking at specific targets. After several rounds of introduction, the decision was made to provide armor to deal with the "heavy threat" posed by the T-62's 115mm gun, using anticipated ammunition improvements. 1980s, and the new 125-mm T-64 and T-72 guns fired high-explosive anti-tank shells.

In May 1973, Chrysler Defense and General Motors submitted an offer. Both are armed with a 105mm M68, a licensed L7 and a 20mm Bushmaster. Chrysler opted for the 1,500 horsepower Lycoming AGT1500 gas turbine engine. The GM model is powered by the same 1,500 horsepower diesel engine used in the American MBT-70 and XM803.
Learning from the experience of that year's Doomsday War, several changes were made to the design.
